I grew up on a council estate with parents who were on benefits for most of my childhood. When they weren’t on benefits, my mum was a cleaner and my dad sold newspapers at White City station. I didn’t go to university because I couldn’t afford to live away from home.
When I somehow found myself working in PR, no one I met spoke like me, grew up like me, or lived a life like I had. So, I quickly learned to change the way I spoke and presented myself to fit in, to be taken seriously and to progress.
Over 20 years I built a successful career in PR and comms, working my way up to managing director for an integrated creative agency. But I am still an anomaly in this world. While there has been an increased (and much-needed) focus on DE&I across the industry, class is rarely part of the conversation, yet it intersects with every aspect of diversity.
